A key thing to note when you start off with your first sinking fly line/s, you need to be systematic about how deep you’re fishing every cast and keep varying your retrieves to present the flies at different speeds and cadences. The fly line to depth speed is measured in seconds of countdown. Sinking fly lines come in sink rates of 1”/per sec. to 9”/per second. For example, a countdown in increments of 5 seconds on every cast in order to cover depths effectively is made to ensure fishing the water column in time/depth intervals. This chart allows a quick visual while on the water to determine depth by time allowable fly line sinking. The depth chart can be conveniently stuck to a fly box, boat bag, thwart board, or boat gunwale in a suitable fashion to be quickly at hand.
